If you have been taking Nexium® for heartburn, or other ulcer prophylaxis, it’s important to know how to take it properly. Here’s what you need to know.
Nexium® is a proton-pump inhibitor. It reduces acidity in the stomach. This is the same medication that is commonly used to treat peptic ulcers, or reflux disease. Nexium® works by blocking the acid production in the stomach, which helps to relieve symptoms of the painful ulcer. It is available as tablets or capsules, but is available as a liquid suspension.
You need to take Nexium® exactly as prescribed by your doctor. The usual dosage of Nexium® varies based on the condition being treated. It’s important to follow your doctor’s instructions carefully and not to exceed the recommended dosage.
You should swallow the Nexium® with a glass of water before or after eating. Nexium® can be taken with or without food. However, if you take it with a large meal, it may take longer to work.
Nexium® can cause a number of side effects. These are generally mild and go away on their own within a few days of taking the medication. Less common side effects may include:
If you experience any unusual symptoms while taking Nexium®, you should contact your doctor immediately.
The usual amount of Nexium® you will need to take depends on the condition being treated. If you are going to have an operation, or an endoscopy, Nexium® is typically taken for proton-pump inhibitors like Prevacid®.
There are several other medications that are sometimes taken as part of the proton-pump inhibitor proton pump inhibitor (PPI). These medications can include:
When you take Nexium®, it’s important to avoid taking it in the following situations:
Always follow your doctor’s directions on the dosage of your medications and the specific type of proton-pump inhibitor you’re taking. If you’re taking other PPIs or other medications, talk to your doctor about which medications are safe for you.
It’s important to be aware that Nexium® is a proton pump inhibitor and should only be used under the supervision of a health care professional. This means that the medication can cause more side effects than just its nameagged effects.
If you take Nexium® or Prilosec® as prescribed by your doctor, be sure to inform your health care professional about any medical conditions or medications you are currently taking. This includes any allergies you may have.
It’s important to be aware that taking Nexium® or Prilosec® with other medications can sometimes increase your risk of serious side effects. That being said, these medications can still cause certain side effects. It’s important to talk to your doctor about all the medications you’re taking to prevent any potential risks.
You’ll usually take Nexium® with a meal or snack to help your body digest and absorb the medication. However, if you start to feel nauseous, you may want to take the medication at least one hour before food to help reduce stomach acid production. Nexium® can also cause an upset stomach if ingested.
